Their red uniforms, ironed khakis and new face masks had been laid out the night before in preparation for the first day of school at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. Many American Indians and Alaska Natives say the dramatic increase in their numbers recorded in last year’s census supports their long-standing argument that Indigenous history should get more attention in public school classrooms. Hundreds of N.J. students honor Hispanic Heritage Month with parade (PHOTOS)

Hundreds of students at two Newark schools took part in a parade Wednesday to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month after the cultural celebration was postponed last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Elementary school students from KIPP Upper Roseville Academy and KIPP Truth Academy paraded around the North Ward neighborhood, waving country flags and wearing traditional dress with decorative masks.
